Kinetic Monte Carlo simulation of heterometal epitaxial deposition

چکیده
Vapor deposited multilayers consisting of alternating ferromagnetic and nonferrous metals are being used for magnetic sensing and data storage devices. Their performance is dependent upon interface morphology which is a sensitive function of deposition condition such as the deposition rate, deposition temperature, and flux angle of incidence. A two-dimensional kinetic Monte Carlo method has been developed and used to explore these effects during the growth of model Ni/Cu/Ni multilayers under low adatom impact energy conditions where thermal diffusion is the only mechanism of atomic assembly. An embedded atom method potential with a two-body cross-potential was used for calculation of the activation energies. It takes into account both the atomic configuration of neighboring atoms and their species. Using an extended set of activation barriers the simulations demonstrate that the interface roughness increases almost linearly with increasing layer thickness during the growth, and is more pronounced when depositing a nickel layer than when depositing a copper layer. The deposition of copper is found to help smooth nickel layers. The simulations demonstrate the existence of an optimal growth window in deposition rate–temperature space where the interfacial roughness of a Ni/Cu/Ni multilayer could be minimized. By analyzing the details of individual atomic jumps, the cause of the surface instability is revealed to be the activation and rapid increase of reverse Schwoebel jumps above a temperature threshold. 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Effects of deposition angle in low-temperature metal (100) epitaxial growth
The effects of oblique incidence on the surface roughness in low-temperature Cu /Cu 100 epitaxial growth are investigated via kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, which include the effects of shadowing as well as short-range and long-range attraction. While the effects of deposition angle are found to be relatively weak at 200 K, at a slightly lower temperature 160 K both the surface roughness and ...

متن کاملFrom Initial to Late Stages of Epitaxial Thin Film Growth: STM Analysis and Atomistic or CoarseGrained Modeling
Epitaxial thin film growth by vapor deposition or molecular beam epitaxy under ultra‐high vacuum conditions generally occurs in two stages: (i) nucleation and growth of well‐separated islands on the substrate; (ii) subsequent formation of a thicker continuous film with possible kinetic roughening. For homoepitaxial growth, two‐dimensional (2D) monolayer islands are formed during submonolayer de...

Abstract. An efficient, semi-rigorous synchronous algorithm for parallel kinetic Monte Carlo simulations is presented. The accuracy and parallel efficiency are studied as a function of processor size, number of processors, and the ratio D/F of monomer hopping rate (D) to deposition rate (F ) for two different simple models of epitaxial growth. Since only local communication is required, the alg...
متن کاملKinetic Monte Carlo Simulation of Epitaxial Thin Film Growth: Formation of Submonolayer Islands and Multilayer Mounds
We consider homoepitaxy (or low-misfit heteroepitaxy) via vapor deposition or MBE under UHV conditions. Thin film growth is initiated by nucleation and growth of 2D islands in the submonolayer regime. For atoms subsequently deposited on top of islands, a step edge barrier often inhibits downward transport and produces kinetic roughening during multilayer growth. Such unstable growth is characte...
